Decoration Decluttering Tips

holiday decor on a mantle after decluttering

It is that time of year again.

Fall rolls into Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years.

All bundled into just 3 fast months!

And almost all of these holidays… come with DECORATIONS!

The beginning of each season is a great time to evaluate what you have, what you need, and what you DON’T NEED.

First of all, if you don’t have a home for your decorations and they’re just strewn about… we will work on that!  But assuming you already have some sort of holiday décor storage, we are going to talk about what your décor process should look like.

We will use fall decorations for our example here… but it pertains to all seasonal items.

Take out your bin (or bins).

And BEFORE making any decoration purchases… I suggest taking the following steps:

1)      Throw out anything that is broken.

2)      Do a first round of decluttering of things that no longer fit your home or your style.

3)      Decorate.

4)      If you must… go buy items to fill in the gaps in your décor.

5)      See what is left in your bin(s) after you’re all done decorating… and donate* those items!

  • The only caveat to this rule is if you’re in a life transition period and are doing less decorating than you normally do. i.e. Moving or growing your family

6)      After the season is over, put things away in their designated home.

7)      Don’t forget to label!

8)      Move onto the next holiday.

Some of this might seem obvious, and it is.  However, it is important to acknowledge that just because something is seasonal and stored away, it doesn’t mean that it doesn’t deserve regular decluttering just like everything else in your home.  Decluttering is the first step to getting organized.

*Donating early in this process is important as many donation places will only accept holiday items “in season”.  They do not want Christmas décor in January… so make the majority of your decisions when you are decorating.
